North Shore ATV: on the BEACH!
Did you know there's only ONE company on Oahu that has single-rider ATVs? And it's located on the NORTH SHORE? AND there's beach trails? In this article, I share my experience with North Shore ATVs.
If you've seen ATVs on Oahu before, you might already know about the Kualoa Ranch (“Jurassic Valley”) ATVs. However, those have been discontinued and swapped to the multi-passenger UTVs. I still wanted to check out a single-rider ATV….and found it HERE at North Shore ATV.

Our Experience:
We had a blast checking out these ATVs on the North Shore.
The trail begins with a slow ascent, allowing riders to acclimate to the powerful yet easy-to-handle ATVs. Soon, the terrain becomes more challenging, offering a blend of excitement and skill-testing obstacles. The roaring engines and the crunch of gravel beneath the tires create adventure as you navigate through the twists and turns of the trail.
North Shore Stables takes pride in its commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism. The ATV tour is designed to minimize the environmental impact, ensuring that the beauty of the natural surroundings is preserved for generations to come. They do this by having you plant a small plant or tree during the tour which was really fun!
Tour/Activity Options
If you are traveling with kids, this is the only ATV option on the island that has smaller ATVs (see below) that are kid size and allow passengers on the single-rider ATV. There are some age restrictions so make sure to double-check when you book.
Age Requirements:
- Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent
- Large ATV Drivers must be 16 years of age or older
- Medium ATV Drivers must be 12 years of age or older
- Small ATV Drivers must be 10 years of age or older
- Passengers must be 8 years of age or older
- Only one passenger is allowed per driver
- Passengers are allowed only on Large ATVs
How I Got There
North Shore Stables has both horseback riding and ATV tours. From Waikiki, it's about 32 miles (51 km) and takes about 1-hour to drive. Traffic to the North Shore can be unpredictable so allow 2-hours.
Since it's in Wailua, you can go early and head to the North Shore Marketplace to check out art galleries, grab a bite to eat, or explore. It's about 2 miles (3.2km) from the ATVs.
What I Packed
Having a belt bag was key. I tossed in my phone so I could take photos but be hands-free.
Insider Insights & Tips
Bring an extra change of clothes for after. It will get DUSTY! We were provided with goggles to keep a lot of the dust out which was helpful. There's also an area of the farm where you can get food to feed the animals. We stopped by to feed some of the goats. They were very friendly and used to being fed by visitors.
