Cons of Renting a Car (Oahu)

A lot of these depend on WHICH ISLAND you are renting a car. In general, OAHU is the most accessible island in terms of transportation (ex. many tours/activities will pick you up at your Waikiki hotel). I would recommend a rental car for the neighbor islands: MAUI, BIG ISLAND, KAUAI, etc.

CON: Flexibility and Convenience

While a rental car can provide flexibility and convenience in many places, it does not always. For Waikiki (island: Oahu, city: Honolulu), most hotels and Air BnBs charge $25-55 per night for parking. Street parking is very hard to find – and if it is found, there is often signage for towing during certain times of the day.

Taking a rental car to drive 15-minutes…only to spend another 45-minutes looking for free parking takes away the convenience.

CON: Traffic

Oahu has some of the worst traffic on the Hawaiian islands. If you're not used to this, it can be incredibly frustrating. Similarly, on Oahu, if you aren't very familiar with the roads or directions – you might not know where to avoid during certain times of the day for the WORST rush hour traffic.

If you are staying in Waikiki and have the option to be picked up for your tour/activity or drive, it might make more sense to opt for the pick-up.
